Hail and well met, I'm JD aka Kane of the Duggan Clan from Ireland.  I have joined the Loch Laven site in hopes to learn more about who you are and the join others in the attempt to live a part of my history that is still a big part of my life now.

I'm interested in going to pennsic this year (first timer) and keeping to as traditional as possible I'll be representing my familys clan.  Currently I'm working on having a great kilt and kilt made with the Irish Tartan of my family which hailed from Cork.  Other then that I am totally open to any and all suggestions on what to do and how to go about being ready for pennsic and other sca events.

I wish to thank-you all ahead of time for any help that you might be able to offer.

JD aka Kane

Well met!

You will see that we have some discussions going on here, and I beleive that most of us are more than willing to answer specific questions, as well, if you have any!....

If it is your intention to camp with us at Pennsic, you'll need to contact our Laird, Colin, and make arrangements with him for that.  The pre-registration deadline is fast approaching, and without pre-registering, you'll most likely end up in singles camping, which can be in a great but too small for real use site, or can be in the parking lot or a ditch!.

Welcome!

Sasha

Thank-you for the response.  I am greatly looking forward to trying to add my part to the celtic history of my clan.  As I do not have a place to stay at pennsic I would very much like to see if it is possible to join you and your fellow kinsmen for this coming pennsic.

On the myspace group Erik aka Amadeus stated that one does not need the sca for this.  I posted my response on that group site as well but I thought I would throw my question to that out here as well.  How does one not need the sca, I thought that pennsic was an sca event?

Kane,

To answer that question, Pennsic is an official SCA event, HOWEVER, one need NOT be a paid member of the SCA in order to attend.  That is the rule at all SCA events.  There is generally a non-member surcharge added to the site fee for people who wish to attend and are not or do not wish to be paid members of the Society.

Your membership status in the society, unless you are under ban or revocation for whatever reason, will NEVER prevent you from attending an SCA event, although it will usually cost you a few extra dollars in site fees to not have the membership card.

If you have a household of any description and can use one mailing address for it, it is easy enough to have one person be the "sustaining" member, which is the one who gets the newsletters, and to add the other household members as "associate" or "family" members, depending on the nature of the relationship you share.  Please see the online membership page at www.sca.org

If you are planning to attend Pennsic, the cost of membership is less than the surcharge, generally, and it will save you money in the long run if you attend more SCA events.  Should you choose to fight, you must be a member and you must have a signed waiver on file with the SCA office and be issued a blue card before you can become authorised to fight or participate in any activity deemed to be more dangerous than the general attendance of an event.  (There are many activities available, depending on your interest, ability and the event co-ordination).

If you are first aid and cpr certified, there is always room for another apprentice chiurgeon....  Water bearers are alwasy needed for battles, and both of these activities usually put you "in the fray" so to speak, but also require a waiver and a mentor person, and/or some form of training, albeit brief.

For any camping event, you will be placed with whatever group you pre-register to be a part of.  You DO need the consent of the group (such as Loch Laven) in order to show up and actually camp with them, and in most cases, the group will take you and if they do not, there is what is called "singles camping", which is all the people not registered in an encampment.

Hope this clears it up for you a bit.

Sasha

I am most honored bye your response Sasha and to you M'lord Colin.  Sasha you have greatly helped elaborate and explain the sca/nonsca in detail.  I thank-you for taking the time to do so.  I feel I have a better understanding of events to come now.  Since I do not wish to try to survive in the singles area I will send a message to your Laird Colin MacLaren in hopes that he and Loch Laven would welcome me as a guest to this years pennsic.

Again Thank-you to all.

Kane
