Kane,
To answer that question, Pennsic is an official SCA event, HOWEVER, one need NOT be a paid member of the SCA in order to attend. That is the rule at all SCA events. There is generally a non-member surcharge added to the site fee for people who wish to attend and are not or do not wish to be paid members of the Society.
Your membership status in the society, unless you are under ban or revocation for whatever reason, will NEVER prevent you from attending an SCA event, although it will usually cost you a few extra dollars in site fees to not have the membership card.
If you have a household of any description and can use one mailing address for it, it is easy enough to have one person be the "sustaining" member, which is the one who gets the newsletters, and to add the other household members as "associate" or "family" members, depending on the nature of the relationship you share. Please see the online membership page at www.sca.org
If you are planning to attend Pennsic, the cost of membership is less than the surcharge, generally, and it will save you money in the long run if you attend more SCA events. Should you choose to fight, you must be a member and you must have a signed waiver on file with the SCA office and be issued a blue card before you can become authorised to fight or participate in any activity deemed to be more dangerous than the general attendance of an event. (There are many activities available, depending on your interest, ability and the event co-ordination).
If you are first aid and cpr certified, there is always room for another apprentice chiurgeon.... Water bearers are alwasy needed for battles, and both of these activities usually put you "in the fray" so to speak, but also require a waiver and a mentor person, and/or some form of training, albeit brief.
For any camping event, you will be placed with whatever group you pre-register to be a part of. You DO need the consent of the group (such as Loch Laven) in order to show up and actually camp with them, and in most cases, the group will take you and if they do not, there is what is called "singles camping", which is all the people not registered in an encampment.
Hope this clears it up for you a bit.
Sasha
